3 years ago today...
It was 3 years ago today that SPC, my friend Moon, and I found Outpost #31. Aug. 6th, 2003. What a day that was, I will never forget it. That day started at the Vancouver Int'l Airport at 6:00AM where we met for a two hour 12-seater prop engine flight north over snowcapped Rockies to Terrace, BC. From there a 5 hour drive from there reaching the isolated border towns of Stewart & Hyder. What would turn out to be a very fortunate impropmtu decision we decided to make the drive up that late afternoon and within a couple of hours we found the site, remains of the camp, and of course the Norwegian helicopter wreckage. Finding the site and hitting the jackpot on the first day allowed us to return prepared on the 2nd day... We got \"Hyderized\" at the Sealaska Inn that night, sat at the same stools at the bar where John, Kurt, & Co. drank, and watched THE THING in the bar with locals. Early next morning after an Alaskan Breakfast and a visit to the hardware store in town for supplies (a hacksaw blade and canvas sacks) we ventured back up to the site just beyond Salmon Glacier and set about to bring home a 15' section of the rotor blade. Damn, I wished I could say the same. It should have been a great feeling to stay where all the actors have played in the movie. Have you've been to the Norwedian camp too? :P It's a short hole you know... An hour there, an hour back...

The destroyed Outpost was used as the Norwegian camp, they built a small extra stand-in set to the rear. The scenes with Doc and Mac exploring the Norge camp was filmed after they blew up Outpost #31. T

Got room for a third next trip...?

Todd- 12-07-2006

We got room for as many who want to attend. This trip will be awesome, to say the least. I know myself and SPC are going for sure, and there is a good roster of others who are very seriosuly interested. T

Add me in as an interest. I would skip a semester of college to join you fellas. I know that it is one thing to go to the Thing-Fest, it's totally another to actually go to the site. Financially, it would be difficult, we'll just have to wait and... see what happens.

RuFiOh54- 12-09-2006

Yeah, it'd take some work, but I think it'd be worth it, maybe I'll just take some summer courses....

like Future, add me as an interest. i'd very much like to go to this. it's a shame i haven't been up to Stewart anyways, considering i live in the province. actually, it's a shame i dont bother to go into the north or interior of the province at all. i love the ocean, but i'd be willing to leave the coast for a while just to experience the site of the movie. man, what a fantastic trip that would be.
