Earthquake rocks Northern B.C, Alaska
Earthquake Rocks Northern Canada, Alaska WHITEHORSE (CP) - A moderate earthquake has shaken the northwestern tip of British Columbia, along the Alaska and Yukon borders. The U.S. Geological Survey says the shaker at 7:49 a.m. (PT) had a magnitude of 5.6 and was centred in a sparsely populated region of B.C., about 100 kilometres southwest of Whitehorse. The quake, at a depth of about 4.7 kilometres, triggered a flood of phone calls to media outlets by residents reporting a distinct rolling sensation. News director Ron McFadyen of CKRW Whitehorse says people described the tremor as "the strongest in recent memory," although no damage is reported. His wife Cathy was in the shower in their basement when she "felt the shower moving and had to put her hands to the side to steady herself." Wayne Merry of Atlin, B.C., about 100 kilometres to the east of the epicentre, says "it was a long, continuous shake with a quick vibration (lasting) about 20 seconds or so." T

What are you trying to say? :? An Alien spaceship under the ground? Give us some directions man! There'd be now way we're going to make it to the norwegian camp!

Moneo- 01-10-2007

Earthquake? Woah, thats really unexpected... I'm at least happy that no-one died  .. weird stuff is seriously going on in there :D

thething.ca- 01-10-2007

Maybe it'll stir up some buried outpost set pieces!!!

Future Filmmaker- 01-10-2007

Maybe some high-powered explosives left over from the camp that were forgotten got ignited beneath ice...

The epicentre of this quake was a good 500 kms north of Stewart and doubt it was felt at the site. Due to the placement of Outpost #31 Ground Zero near Salmon Glacier you can always find the filming location on Google Earth by just zooming in on Northwestern BC and looking for the large 'T'-shaped ice flow. The Outpost lies just to the north. In this image you can just make out the old Granduc Mining road running parallel to the river and up the mountainside. The yellow line is the US-Canada border. You can see how you have to enter the US at Hyder, Alaska to access the site but re-enter Canada en route to where the site lies...just past the Salmon Glacier look-out there is an embankment down to a level clearing on the north side. Here you can still see a circular area where gravel has been back-filled to create the grounds of Outpost #31. Amazingly if you zoom right in and know what you are looking for you can actually see this on Google Earth... Mountains, the glacier, and Summit Lake to the west/south-west (all shots of the Outpost in the film were taken in this direction) and the mining road and treeline to the east/north-east. T

DUDE! We're going there!!! (I'm gigglin' like a school girl! lol)

Future Filmmaker- 01-11-2007

Shit, I wonder how much winter gear I'd have to purchase. I ain't used to that kind of cold and altitude, ya know? I've never been in anything like it.

Todd- 01-12-2007

FF: You won't need any winter gear if you come up, and it won't be cold. The trip is planned for mid-summer - August 2009 - if you look at the pics from our August 2003 trip I was wearing shorts the day we found the Outpost. It was in the low 70's and sunny both days we were there. Cold won't be a factor, what will be a factor is the BUGS! If you have never been far north in the summer you don't know what bugs are (mosquitos, deer flies, horse flies and black flies - oh my!) It is INSANE. Hope you can make it up with us in '09, T

Garlic often helps I hear.

thething.ca- 01-12-2007

Garlic? You want to marinade yourself for them too? lol Just kidding. It's gonna look something like this, there: :D :D :D :D :D

Future Filmmaker- 01-12-2007

Actually, if you eat garlic, it's a natural parasite repellent. That's where the myth that vampires are allergic to garlic comes from. Something about garlic either hurts them or they have a distaste for the scent and taste.

Benson- 01-13-2007

Garlic as a repellant isn't proven. In fact, it's been said that for some people, it will actually ATTRACT mosquitos to them instead of repelling them! I'll stick with DEET.

Todd- 01-14-2007

I did some quick research on this; Benson is right, there is no proof garlic can repel bugs. (I didn't find anything about it attracting them though...) I eat at least a clove of garlic everyday, love it and add it to almost everything 'cept breakfast and snacks. I'm not keen on DEET or any other chemicals, I'll try the natural stuff and plan to just cover up well this time. (No shorts!) The bugs up there are really nasty. If you haven't been up north in the summer you don't know what it's like. I had heard in-depth stories from my brother who has been up to do tree plant the past 3 summers but hadn't really experienced it until Stewart. The bugs can literally drive you insane. The insects at the site were fortunately more just annoying, I actually didn't get bit that much, they just drive you mad and came on in non-stop swarms. When Steve and I were hack-sawing the rotor blade off we'd take turns, one would saw the other would wave away the bugs. Maybe we'll get cooler weather when we go back up there and that'll curb them a bit. It was quite warm the two days (Aug. 6th & 7th, 2003) we were up there. T

Flying, biting insects absolutely love me! I get ravaged if I'm not careful. I'm already getting the 45 gallon drums of deet sent to Stewart for when we get there.
