East Coast to Vancouver: Cathay Pacific Airlines
Thanks to Kim (aka I Know I'm Human) for this info: Anyone coming from the NYC area or the East Coast should look into Cathay Pacific Airlines to Vancouver. Their fares are very cheap round trip. Out of curiosity I checked for this August and the roundtrip fare between NYC and Vancouver was $339 if booked in March. Something to remember and look into for next spring when we are planning this trip. Thanks Kim! T

I'm having serious trouble finding flights from San Antonio or Dallas/Fort Worth (which is over 400 miles from where i live) to Vancouver to Terrace. The cost of a flight to Vancouver from San Antonio alone is $535 and the Vancouver to Terrace is $610! Where am I gonna be able to find something I can afford? Those are just insane prices. I can save up maybe $1000 max for this whole trip. I cannot afford flights with those prices.

FF, This is the airline we used for Van to Terrace: http://www.hawkair.com I just punched in a rate for this Aug. 8th to 12th return Vancouver to Terrace and got $355 CDN. Almost half what you found. I'd recommed San Antonio to fly to Vancouver, $535 (is that return?) is not a bad price at all. Honestly you will probably need a bit more than a grand to do this trip, but not much more. The plan would be to all arrive in Vancouver and all get on flight(s) the same day to Terrace where we will meet up and rent vehicles at the Terrace airport for the 4 hour drive north to Stewart/Hyder. Depending on how many of us go, we can go in a vehicle rentals/rooms and save. Also the rooms in Stewart are cheap - nothing fancy up there. Two in a room will be about $30-$40/nite. 3 nights/plus food. We're still 16 months out. Plenty of time to save. I'm not sure how many will actually make it but the trip roster is huge. Nothing is carved in stone for this trip (even for me) but I am pretty sure at this point I will be able to make it. I plan to celebrate my 35th B-Day on Outpost #31 Ground Zero. T

I see. I guess $800 is much better than $1100 just for the flights alone. Plus a tops of $120 for room. Then food. I probably will be bringing some of my own food if possible. It'd be cool to cook while we're out there.

Bringing some food is always a great way to save $ and eat a bit healthier while traveling. I eat a good amount of food and did bring some with me on the '03 trip; snack foods which fill in between restaurant meals. There are no kitchenette rooms available in Stewart/Hyder. It'll be diner menus - burger & fries, fish n' chips, roast beef a mashed 'taters, etc. The "LumberJack Breakfast" there is awesome! We do plan to go up to the site at night and there has been discussion about camping out - looks like it will be fine - but absolutely no cooking or open food at the site! That area is the bear Mecca of North America, and August is the bear's most active month. T
