FAQ: GOOFS! When Palmer's blood sample is -*test*-('")ed by MacReady......the petrie dish that had the blood sample in it doesn't shatter when it hits the floor. Although petrie dishes are made from glass and plastic, the ones used in the movie look like glass. Also, the early 80s were still a traditional \\\\\"glass-medical\\\\\" era. Everything went very plastic late 80s to early 90s.
Also, the copper wire that MacReady uses to '-*test*-('") the blood' makes a sound when it scratches the petrie dish giving you the impression that the dish was made from glass.

My favorite is catching the usually professional Kurt Russell cutting up on camera in the background during the very serious \"get me the defibrillator\" scene. Guessing that scene will become more evident when/if the HD/DVD version is ever released by Universal...

What?? I have never even heard of that goof with Mac laughing in the background of that scene. I am gonna watch for it up on the big screen next Satuday.

Hey Todd, is the petrie dish a goof?
Todd- 08-10-2006
Hey Chair-Thing,
Not sure that even a glass petrie dish would break even if dropped, they are pretty hardy...
I am going to keep an eye out for Mac laughing in the background Saturday night. I believe a lot of great goofs went missing from the site over the past two years...
Trust no one....

When Copper is giving chest compressions to Norris, he yells \"Stop that bickering over there! Windows, wheel that defibrillator over here!\" It is shadowy at best on 480 vertical lines that my DVD delivers. But to me, right as Copper says the word \"wheel\" I see Russell begin to crack a big grin. I'd love to be at Thing-Fest to see it on the clear big-screen. I never noticed his ring tan line during the computer chess scene until you mentioned it after a past Thing-Fest. It adds more meaning to the phrase \"cheatin' bitch\" every time see it now...

Both Cory and I watched for Mac cracking up or laughing in the background and we didn't see it. I believe he is supposed to be wincing in pain as he is thawing out his frozen hands.

I can clearly see Mac is pulling a face. He's to far out of focus to tell what's really happening, but I go with the 'pain-part'.
Note that during this scene, several camera's have different angles. It's likely that one is more or less focused on Mac's face.
This doesn't give Kurt Russell the oppertunity to pull a ' strange' face, would it?
I say it's not a goof.

- The reflection of the spinning helicopter rotors on the front windshield of the helicopter as Norris, McReady and Bennings disembark to view the spaceship. You'll notice that they are getting out of the helicopter immediately after landing so the motor is just cycling down yet the rotor speed on the windscreen is pretty slow. The next shot is a slightly panned out view of the side of the chopper and you can plainly see the rotors are still turning pretty quickly.
- The entire Bennings Thing scene. When MacReady put the hot copper in the Palmer blood sample, the blood reacted and when it hit the floor, the blood actually ran off (supporting the idea that all cells are living things), yet when Bennings was being taken over, there were pools of blood just sitting on the floor not moving around. I also thought that the entire area was pretty messy when Bennings was changing yet it appeared pretty clean mere seconds later when Mac, Fuchs and Windows ran into the room to find the broken window and Bennings gone.
- The ease of which Gary broke the glass to shoot the Norwegian at the beginning of the movie.

When they nail Blair in the boards are one way but from the inside the boards have magically been nailed the other way.

the extreme ease when Palmer-Thing runs through millimetre-thick boarding walls.

The ice that the spacecraft is buried in is deep, maybe 50 feet down from the surface - but the ice the thing is buried in is about 4/5 feet - did it do some climbing before it got frozen?

The Goof.... 1. Childs tries to hide his left hand. (This happened when he was telling Macready that \"He got most of the chopper and tractor. He's killed the rest of the dogs.\" If you look closely he is wearing a glove spray painted in black.)
2. The left lapel or shoulder board on Macready's leather jacket came flying off as he was running down the corridor after hearing gunshots.

When Mac hits the fire alarm with his beer can, we see a little piece of glass hanging off to the side. When he releases it, the piece of glass is missing.
