FAQ: SEQUEL\PREQUEL\REMAKE DISCUSSION PREQUEL? SEQUEL? I know many have made this topic but I want to know. Is there any chance in hell that John Carpenter wil make The Thing 2? I think so and I believe so, even if it means to film in Antartica or other isolated areas.
Z@3 Redrum- 09-05-2006
I think certanly not. It's an excellent film, so keep it that way...
Blue-Byte- 09-05-2006
I have sean The Thing more then 30 times (i am not joking) it is a great film i agree, and i am still not tierd of it. But would be great to find out what happens? The Video game dosen't seam that impresive. And wouldent it be posetive if The Thing 2 comes out? It would bring back fans and make more fans.

No biggie, I understand. There are some that agree with you. I'm not privy to what JC will do, its just that he been quoted that he will not do another Thing film and I believe him.

Hollywood will never let \"thing\" go, I'm afraid. They'll milk it to death like they did \"alien vs. predator\" movie or \"freddy vs jason\". maybe the \"thing\" sequel won't be about the thing only but heƤll duke it out with E.T.
\"The Thing vs The X-Men\" or some bs like that.

I've already answered my thoughts on prequel/sequel in the other thread but as for whether or not we'd ever see another Thing movie, I'm not sure and I don't think anyone really is. I know the movie did not do well at the box office due to it's graphic nature and the release of ET, but it has been successful enough to see many different incarnations in video. It would be interesting to find out how many video versions have been made from beta to vhs to dvd to hddvd. Each one of these versions required some work to create and since we've now seen hddvd that means there is definately a demand for this movie.

On the old boards (sorry, I just can't get over having lost all that) I posted in detail how I felt about this. I'll try to paraphrase myself...and I might even be wrong, people change:
PREQUEL - Perhaps doable. The Norge camp really would be a good story though we'd lose the suspense since we know what sort of horror is coming. It would be more like an 'extra' on a DvD than a new movie imho. Still, if done right, it might be fun. Would be even neater if it were actually done in Norwegian!
SEQUEL - WORST...IDEA...EVER. I think that sums it up. Just ONCE let something beautiful lie instead of painting up like a $10 whore.
boathopper- 09-15-2006
there's a sequel script 'the thing from another world' on triggerstreet.com, its for both films. i'm doing everything in my power to get it sold next year. i'm making a horrific teaser trailer. visit my page myspace.com/andyp6
i enjoy all the fan stories as any fan would. but its 2006 now and we need to see this fucker in theatres in the next five years

Here's my thoughts.
IMHO, I don't think a prequel would work purely because we know what the ending is, so you'd have trouble building up the tension.
However, that said, a thought has just crossed my mind - what if it was done 'Blair Witch' style, with maybe some handheld cameras (you'd have to do it on old cine-cameras for that authentic 1982 look) - just imagine, it's pitch black apart from a shining torch, there's no sound apart from the whirring of the camera and the breathing of the guy holding it, the camera swings round the corner to find a full-size Rupture Thing from the game illuminated in the torchlight...screen goes black.
Wouldn't work for all of it, obviously, but that's my thoughts on the prequel. Plus, it would need subtitles as dubbed dialogue or American actors playing Norwegians would suck big time.
As for the sequel, well...
1. Macready and Childs couldn't be in the story - for a start, Kurt Russell and David Keith are too old now to play them without losing the continuity (Kurt in his 50's playing someone in his 30's?). Likewise any script that has them freezing in the cold and then somehow being thawed out sometime later is just very poor and would ruin it. As far as I'm concerned, they froze to death in the ice, and if one/both was a thing, that froze too.
2. You've got a destroyed Norwegian camp and a destroyed American camp - eventually someone in Norway & America would have flown to the camps to see why they had lost contact, found them blown to pieces and asked why. You'd need to explain the camp's disappearance in a future-set sequel somehow, you wouldn't be able to ignore them as if they never existed, ie. 'do you remember that old Outpost 31, where there were all those mysterious deaths?' - NO!
3. There's a rather large exposed UFO buried in the ice...any rescue party, especially the Norwegians due to its proximity to their camp, would have spotted it - how do you explain what happened to it?
4. It shouldn't be based on the game, maybe use ideas from it if anything.
5. Who would play the characters? The original worked as each actor looked the part - the scientists looked like scientists - a sequel would have flavour-of-the-month prettyboy actors and actresses and so would put most people off right there.
6. Setting it in another location - no, this again wouldn't work.
So that's a big thumbs down on the sequel.
What about a redux though of JC's version - maybe use CGI sparingly to enhance some of the effects (we could see the proper Blairthing as it was originally envisaged) - if it was done properly, I'd pay to see that.

THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD- EASIER SITE to everyone.. the screenplay is on myspace.com/snunchykins along with tons of other fun stuff. my bio and trailer project could be seen on myspace.com/andyp6
as for a seqeul.......i hear all your grievances and problems with continuity...they're all solved...all you have to do is read my screenplay and you'll see how perfect it is.....its like reading a book, its fun once you get into it...especially when action starts up around page 30. after you read it and you STILL have problems with how a sequel can't get made, then post your thoughts and i will explain things to you. thanks, andy

We all know this movie is going to try to be hip. They might put Ice Cube or some fuchin' rapper in it. Did you guys see the trailer to the remake of the Hitcher. The Hitcher is a classic, it's perfect. The remake looks fuchin stupid!!!
Hitcher Trailer- http://video.msn.com/v/us/v.htm?g=8bfcf425-5112-4b47-8c3e-1ec6222dd2d8&f=msnmovies/64&fg=copy
I thought the remake of Dawn was good, but I agree. Very empty, and I hate how they tried to put two gangster black dudes trying to be all hip and new. I hate that sh*t, and I also hate on movies where every chick knows karatee. It's tries to be all girl power, and feminist, it's annoying and no I am not sexist. It seriously is annoying. And for the record, I can't watch Small Ville, it's dumb. Very cheesy, very corny, I cannot take it. One week their will be an episode thats like Fast and The Furiouse (Because the second sequal was recently released.) Than the next one was like Saw (Because that was \\\"cool\\\" that month.) And everyone keeps stealing Clarks powers. It makes him pretty ununique, how everyone on that show once stole his power. And how half the population gets super powers, this happens every episode, and the reasons are always pretty dumb. It's pretty much like Degrassi with superheroes, and I do not think people realize it. And I also hate when people are watching it, and you sneeze, and they're like \\\"SHUT THE F*CK UP!!!\\\" and everytime something very stupid happened, but made a boom the person would cheer and be like \\\"Yeaaah! Whooo! ....I invented this show you know...\\" Like they really did. Er, what I'm trying to say Hollywood is pretty retarded.
Z@3 Redrum- 11-23-2006
Yeah, let's just put some stupid girls in it, with stupid boys that have no brains at all, and let's ruin the storyline that made The Thing as big as it is. In my oppinnion Carpenter had to give permission for this, then it certainly didn't come to a remake. But I wait for this movie, with no doubt I watch it, but please don't make a mess of it with stupid characters and a lame script.
Gary- 11-23-2006
It would be nice to know if Carpenter approved this \"sequel-remake\" (weird concept) though he did approve the \"Fog\" remake, didn't he ?
