Mythosman- 03-22-2007

I'll tell ya what I could really go for...A couple of good, long books! Now, quit laughing and get off the floor  ! Seriously, I'd much rather READ about the Norwegian camp, or what happened after Science Station 4, than worry about how some bunch of Hollyweird A-holes are gonna mess up the next Thing movie. So who'd be the best writer for that kind of project (with Carpenter as Supreme Consultant, of course! Remember, JC said he'd never do another Thing MOVIE, not other types of projects  !)? I'm curious to know what the other literary buffs on this forum think :) ! Mythosman

Not a bad idea Mythosman :) As for authors - King, Crichton...or maybe guys from the FAN FICTION section? :)

I've decided to start working on a story(using my idea) that takes place about a day after the first one. When I'm finished I'll post it.

Future Filmmaker- 04-24-2007

Make sure you show it to Todd so he can put it in the Fan Fics section of the site.

I've decided to start working on a story(using my idea) that takes place about a day after the first one. When I'm finished I'll post it. I think that's the only way to start a story - it has to follow on directly after the events of the movie, otherwise there are too many difficult loose ends to tie up convincingly

The only thing I hope they do with the sequel is not introduce woman in the movie, and let the people be dumb as they are in every horror. Of course the movie must take questions with it which we can talk about after, just like the Norris shadow, Blair, Palmer questions, Fuchs etc. Of course the environment has to be Antarctica again (snow, cold) and the Norwegian camp has to be involved, or something like that. The only thing that could be better in the sequel is putting more shocking things into the other camps where things already happens. It can blow up your mind with scary thoughts. I think the part in The Thing (1982) with the visit on the Norwegian camp was one of the best parts in the movie. The use of actors will be important too. I don't wanna see Brad Pitt alike actors, or something like that. To exchange MacReady will be very hard, but I hope it will be a good one.

sequel?I like it!
:D maybe a sequel about the game! jhon carpenter is dr. faraday BUT WAIT!!!! in the movie both childs and macready had a flamethrower at the end, i don't think either were things, I KNOW THE REAL CULPRIT!The blood!the blood is still a lifeform on it's own so if a rescue party came and the blood infected them by crawling to them, it would explain the monsters! The reason for macready being alive is because in the first level of the thing you have allies, im thinking they came back and rescued macready while childs was dead frozen, how does macready out-last childs?1:he had more clothes that were warmer.2: he was in a warmer area than childs when childs was outside longer, neither were things!bring the sequels! The mummy returns was good!

here's my thoughts on the idea of a sequel: I quite enjoyed the Dark Horse Comic take on what happened after Outpost 31 was destroyed. Now, making that into a movie could be done and it would be possible to get Kurt Russel to reprise his role as Mac since he's not too old. The story line in the comic is good enough to film andanswers some of the questions left at the end of the Thing movie. Or, scrap the idea of an immediate sequel and instead jump forward to today, where an expidition rediscovers the remains of Outpost 31, which had been buried under tons of snow & ice after its destruction and has re-emerged thanks to global warming thus exposing/awakening the Thing again. With this we can have an entirely new cast, not have to worry about hiring aging actors and can go in a new direction with the monster. Either option could be done and would work I believe if handled correctly by a decent scriptwriter and director.

John Carpenter himself wanted to do a sequel based on the Dark Horse comics, but he had no studio backing and dropped it.

Talwyn- 05-21-2007

John Carpenter himself wanted to do a sequel based on the Dark Horse comics, but he had no studio backing and dropped it. That's a crying shame! And typical of the studio system that would rather green light such shyte as Steve Martins version of "The Pink Panther" which has to be one of the worst remakes of all time! I wonder if JC has considered the idea of raising the cash himself by publically selling shares in the film? I know Paul Hogan tried this concept and had a good deal of success to make the lameass film, "Crocodile Dundee 3", so the concept is reasonably sound. The only thing the studios can bring along is their marketing power but we know that today, by using the net, you can generate enough hype for a flick eg " Blair Witch Project". So I honestly believe that a sequel could be done, it's just aquiring the rights to the comic and the film would be the tricky part. I reckon the money would flow after that.

IMHO, the Thing is too intelligent to not to give it the right to express it's vision of the World wether in the sequel or in the prequel. The Thing must talk. Where it come from, what it wants, what it thinks, what it thinks about the human race. What would you say, if the Thing, wouldn't be so...vicious in the prequel. If it's agressivity will find a rational explaination? If it would try to contact some men? Negotiate?.. Hear! Hear! I agree completely! An intelligent thing that spoke and communicated would be a good idea. As to my other thought on a sequel/remake, in the bonus material on the thing DVD there are some early discarded plotlines, any of them could be made into a movie of some merit. As to a sequel, what if it were set in the future, and another thing were to be found in the arctic, perhaps near the crash site? Humanity found the saucer and learned a lot of tech from it, and has moved out into space. They find dead worlds that were burned in a war against the things by other races, and discover a record of a war fought against the things by other races that sought to prevent them assimilating everything, and the war destroyed them all, leaving no intelligent life in the galaxy. Meanwhile the alien corpse found near the crash site is thawed.... Explorers race back to earth to warn them of the danger, but too late. An alternative could involve explorers sent out in earth's first starship built with tech salvaged from the saucer, they discover the history of the thing war that wiped out all other intelligent life, piece together the fact one made it to earth and was destroyed by the heroic crew of outpost 31, and find a corpse of an alien from one of the other races on a dead, frozen world. They plan to study it but it turns out to be a thing in disguise, it thaws and the crew must destroy it or the human race is doomed.

Those are great ideas Lexx, very much in line with what could be done with the Thing mileu. Now, if we can form a coherent film company and get the rights...

Im all for a remake, a different take on what happens and how different people respond to being in a really shitty spot. If its done correctly with decent cast, crew and a semi-budget its all good. What as Thing fans do we have to lose? Nothing the 82 version will still be there re-make or not and we will still love it. I just hope its not as bad as the new Fog which was a complete waste of money and a franchise.

I actually had an idea like that. That the Things gain individual personalities when they absorb humans, and I imagined a scene where one of them is revealed to be an infected human through a blood -*test*-('"), but it turns out he was the one who led the blood -*test*-('") (meaning that he wanted to reveal himself), and he had the other guys' weapons so they couldn't do anything, and he remains in his human form, and proceeds to talk to the humans about how fascinating he finds them, because they're the only species that Things have found that has personalities as complex as they are. He explains that the first species the Thing absorbed that actually had a personality was a dog on Earth, but dogs' personalities are much more simpler than humans', and when the Things got a hold of humans, they actually gained complex personalities, and could feel emotions. Now, most of the Things were still cold and unfeeling and acted on nothing but instinct, but this Thing was so amazed by humans, that he actually began to question his own instincts, but he still acted on them anyway because he had to to survive. So, the humans ask him for his help, but he says that they know that he can't help them, because even if he did help kill the rest, they would still have to kill him anyway, because he needed to absorb other life forms to survive. He then comments on how he can't believe that he is trusting his new human instinct more than his original, and they ask him what he means by that, and he actually pours a can of gas over himself, then pulls out a flare and ignites it and lights himself on fire. I dunno, just a stupid, random thought I had. Anyway, with regards to the remake, I can only hope that it isn't crappy, which it has a 95% chance of being. I just hope that they don't make the characters incredibly stupid, that they don't introduce a female character just for the sake of having a sex scene in it (which seems to be the stereotype of most horror movies), and that they don't overload it with bad CGI, but considering that having craploads of crappy CGI is pretty much the golden rule of modern movies, it's not likely. Well, at least they're not remaking it with the same characters, because if they did, I could almost guarantee that they would have had Ice Cube play as Childs or some crap like that. Then again, it wouldn't surprise me if it had a rapper in it anyway. Well, I'm certainly not seeing it when it comes out, that's for sure. I'll wait until other people comment on it, then decide if I'll go see it or not.

Future Filmmaker- 07-12-2007

You must understand, if you remake John Carpenter's The Thing. It will be a remake-of-a-remake.
