I had the unfortunate luck of purchasing the Xbox version first. Turned out it was very poorly optimized for that console. So I went out and got the PC version instead, which is much better running.
Haven't played it for at least 2 years.

I have serious trouble getting through the game.
These things all seem to get the better from me.
Should I use a joy-stick instead of the mouse?

Try cheating. Use the cheat codes:
I could never win either, and after using the cheat codes, I have to say, I don't have the physical energy to defeat several levels and didn't feel required to as I am not a usual gamer, I can't imagine how anbody could defeat these things on later levels. I wanted to see the end. Once you get invincibility, you still have to figure out what to do even though you can now kill all the monsters. The following is simple to do and they are the only ones I know work for sure on PC games. I have some screenshots of the end but in case you haven't done the game to the end, maybe you don't want to know just yet.
Registry Cheats
Open Regedit (start menu, click on 'run' and type in 'regedit') go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Computer Artworks/The Thing/1.0 (or whatever version you have) then create new string values called:
FullWeaponEquip (all weapons)
NPCInvulnerable (all your team members invulnerable)
PlayerInvulnerable (invincibility)
After this right click on each value and choose 'modify' and change each values number to '1'.

I played the game three or four years ago without any cheats. It is not easy, but it is not too hard either. The hardest part I remember is the ramp in the storage - you must go down to the ground level and then back to the second floor. I made dozens of attempts before I successfully left the building. Much harder than any of the bosses or the final THING. Great game and one of the two which really scaried me. I was afraid to turn lights off while playing and I was on the edge of a heart-attack almost all the time...

I'm guessing Silent Hill is the other....?

Nope, I am sorry. The other game I cannot play at night is Doom 3. SIlent Hill is pretty scary too, but it did not make me touch the left side of my chest so often.

I played it on a LAN pary for the first time. I requested the game and I kinda liked it, it absorbed me in a way. I played it the whole day and a friend of mine was very interested in the game too. When I heard it was based on a movie I had to see the movie. Since I watched the horror I was obsorbed by movies too, before that I never watched any movie at all. I have very much to thank the game to. I think a second movie would waste the whole Thing story, but the game has just made more fans of The Thing, like me.

Doom 3 is by far one of the best games ever made. I watched the development of that game from the first time details were released and stored them in the back of my mind. John Carmack did exactly what he set out to do, create a single-player focused game intent on scaring the crap out of you. To this day, he remains one of the few who actually stuck to his guns from day one and I applaud him for it, Doom 3 delivered hugely. If you ever try playing this game in the dark with your 5.1 cranked up a bit, you'll either walk away shaking every 5 - 10 minutes or jump out of your chair.
I had no problems with the suprises in the Thing simply because of the way the game was setup. It bore no resemblence to the movie in that there was virtually little to no paranoia surrounding my character. Add to that the frustration of the control system, auto-aim, floods of baddies and buggy FMV's and you have a game that fell well short of expectations and I firmly believe it killed any chance of a resurrection of the Thing franchise in general.
BTW, anyone notice the eerie simularities between the immersive storyline woven by Doom 3 and The Thing (movie) and the fact that both directors have eerily similar names, John Carmack and John Carpenter?

Doom III is by far more frightening cause it's environment is more darker. Of course the graphics are more realistic then those from The Thing, but the plot is a little less interesting.
