Hi, but tell me, who goes there?
Hello everyone! I'm new around here. I first discovered The Thing a few years ago in a sci-fi film magazine which had reviews on the best sci-fi films over the last 100 years, and the film was, quite rightly, one which was included. Back then I was too young to be allowed to watch it, and it wasn't until last year that I got it on DVD as a Christmas present and watched it. But my interest in The Thing started way back with that magazine, and I was fascinated by the unique concept of an enemy that could be anything, anywhere, and at any time. As a fan of John Carpenter films in general, particularly his Vampires (1998), I was dying for years to finally see this film. I'm so glad I did. I think it's an amazing film and I think The Thing is one of the best sci-fi enemies of all time. I recently got the game on PC and that is equally great. It's just a pity the film was released so soon after E.T. because if it had been released a while later once all the E.T. hype had died down, then it may have done better at the box office than it actually did, and may be more well remembered and appreciated nowadays. Still, thank goodness I found Outpost 31, because I like talking about The Thing and was worried that there weren't any websites out there that discuss the film like this. So there's my introduction... and, oh yes, I'm most definitely human!

Good idea. Don't want me suddenly growing three tentacled arms and an extra head now do we?

The word 'blood-*test*-('")' goes like a wildfire around here, hey? Well, F.F. and I take all the blood-*test*-('")s around here. So, take a seat on our couch and enjoy the -*test*-('"). It will hurt. Be very welcome. F.F., he's all yours, buddy.

*Sits down on the couch and prepares for the blood -*test*-('")* Can't be too laid back with the blood -*test*-('")s when your enemy looks, walks, talks, smells and even thinks like one of our own can we? One question that has just sprung to mind - would a DNA -*test*-('") reveal The Thing if it was disguised as a human? I know that DNA -*test*-('")ing wasn't available in 1982 and I know that The Thing can perfectly replicate the DNA of its disguised form, but surely there would be some tell-tale trace in the DNA that would give it away? Like a tiny chemical trace within the replicated cells or something? Still, the blood -*test*-('") is far simpler as anyone can do it as long as they have a source of heat and a dish for the blood. It looks far cooler as well, having the scream as the blood gets warmed up and then reacting to it. I just wonder if a DNA -*test*-('") would achieve a similar result? Would be interesting to see how and if the advances in DNA -*test*-('")ing feature in a remake of The Thing, if a remake is ever made.

The blood probably wouldnt be the same the thing has to have its own blood or else it wont be able to function the thing probably wouldnt go THAT detailed. A remake is unlikly seeing how it bombed at the box office.

Well there are two sources that say that The Thing might be brought back in the 21st century, either as a prequel to the original story, or as a remake of the John Carpenter version. Whether or not there is any truth in either of these, or whether or not another film about The Thing will ever be made, is entirely open to debate. The two sources, both from Wikipedia: In September of 2006, it was announced in Fangoria magazine that Strike Entertainment, the production company behind Slither and the Dawn of the Dead remake, is looking for a writer or writers to write a theatrical prequel to The Thing. According to Variety, Strike Entertainment and Universal Pictures are preparing to remake The Thing. Ronald D. Moore is set to write the script with Marc Abraham and Eric Newman producing. David Foster, producer of the original film, will be executive producer of the remake. To be honest, I think a prequel to the original film might not be such a good thing. It would take away all the mystery and evil nature of The Thing, if it was explained exactly what it was, where it came from and why it wanted to take over the Earth. Having it as just a nameless shape-shifting creature that came from an unknown planet makes it much more frightening than giving it a name, a race to belong to, and a planet of origin. It is said that we humans fear most what we don't understand, and with The Thing, we know so little about it, other than what it can do (i.e. appear as any living organism) and what can harm it (i.e. fire/heat). That lack of understanding is largely what gives The Thing such a frightening advantage over us humans. A prequel film could wipe out that whole thing about The Thing being so powerful and scary because we simply don't know anything very much about it. A remake, IMHO, could be interesting, as it could bring the story up to date with the present day, feature better weapons and even better special effects (brilliant though they are in the JC version), with The Thing's transformations made even scarier by CGI. As I said before, with DNA -*test*-('")ing now that could feature in some way. I know it would be a pity if JC didn't direct the remake, but who knows what a different director could do? It might be a good remake or a bad remake, but an interesting one nevertheless. A remake might never happen though, but I think it would be worth checking out if it ever does happen.
