Killer stabbed and decapitated victim on Canadian bus I just came across this urban nightmare made real
This must be the week for extreme weirdness? :?
http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,24111268-2703,00.htmlA MAN aboard a Greyhound bus travelling across Canada calmly stabbed another man and decapitated him, pausing briefly to display the head to horrified passengers.
The attacker then proceeded to disembowel his victim, witnesses told police.
Passengers fled the bus in panic, and police said later their quick evacuation may have kept the killer from turning on others.
A 40-year-old man, who was not identified, was arrested for the murder on the bus, which was travelling overnight Wednesday from Edmonton, Alberta, to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sergeant Steve Colwell told a news conference.
Colwell said police apprehended the man when he broke a window and tried to escape from the bus by jumping out. Authorities declined to name the victim and provided little details about the stabbing.
Colwell said they didn't know what prompted the attack and said they had not yet interviewed the man as of mid Thursday afternoon. He did not explain the delay.
Passengers said the attacker did not seem to know the victim, who appeared to be about 19 years old, and that he wore sunglasses throughout the attack although it was the middle of the night.
Passenger Garnet Caton said the victim was sleeping with headphones on before he was stabbed 40 or 50 times by the man sitting next to him.
"We heard this bloodcurdling scream and turned around, and the guy was standing up, stabbing this guy repeatedly, like 40 or 50 times," Caton said from a hotel in Brandon, Manitoba, where he and other passengers had been taken to rest.
Caton said the bus stopped and the passengers scrambled to disembark while the suspect allegedly began methodically carving up the man's body.
The attacker severed the man's head with a large hunting knife and held the head up by the door for others to see.
"When he was attacking him, he was calm ... like he was at the beach," Caton said. "There was no rage or, or anything. He was just like a robot stabbing the guy."
Caton said that the attacker eventually tried to get off the bus, but that he, the driver and a passing trucker who had stopped to help, threw their weight against the door to prevent the man from leaving. When the attacker appeared to be attempting to start up the bus and drive away, the bus driver went to the rear of the bus and somehow disabled it, Caton said.
Fellow passenger Cody Olmstead said the man "dropped the head and went back and started cutting the body back up."
Olmstead said the man later taunted police, who had surrounded the bus, and dropped the head in front of them.
He said some of the passengers were watching the movie "Zorro" when the attack took place.
Greyhound spokeswoman Abby Wambaugh said 37 passengers and one driver were on the bus.
The victim had been on the bus since Edmonton. Caton said the attacker boarded the bus around Brandon, Manitoba, about 130 kilometres west of Portage La Prairie, a town in the heart of the Canadian Prairies.
The suspect had been on the bus for about an hour and didn't even sit near his victim at first.
"He sat in the front at first, everything was normal," Caton said.
He continued: "We went to the next stop and he got off and had a smoke with another young lady there. When he got on the bus again, he came to the back near where I was sitting. He put his bags in the overhead compartment. He didn't say a word to anybody. He seemed totally normal. About a half an hour later, we heard this bloodcurdling scream."
Colwell, the RCMP spokesman, praised the passengers for their behaviour.
"It's not something that happens regularly on a bus," he said. "You're sitting there enjoying your trip and then all of a sudden somebody gets stabbed. I imagine it would be pretty traumatic ... the way they acted was extraordinary."
Colwell added that "they reacted swiftly, calmly in exiting the bus and, as a result, nobody else was injured."
Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day called it a "horrific" incident, but did not discuss details of the attack, saying he did not want to jeopardise the investigation.
"We want to make sure that the process is followed as aggressively as possible, a full legal process, and the perpetrator is definitely dealt with the full force of the law," he said.
Day called it bizarre and extremely rare.
"The horrific nature of it is probably one-of-a-kind in Canadian history," Day said.

My god, that's terrible!
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for blood and guts and gore, but this is just absurd. What an asshole..

That killer is a sick man.
We should treat him with a 9 mm headshot. No pain, no regrets.
(really).
Being a father, I know what it is to 'safe' life. That man took a life, just like that. There's nothing he can say that would make it easier on the remaining family.
Just get it over with.
Tribyen- 08-03-2008
I'm sorry, but whether the man was crazed or not, I wouldn't be able to let someone stab a person 40 or 50 times and not try to intervene. yes, I'd be risking my life, but for all the passengers to do absolutely nothing except get off the bus? it tells me that if I'm being attacked by someone, I shouldn't expect anyone else's help because they're not willing to intervene. when there's that many people against one man, they should have helped. I guess I'm just that selfless, but I wouldn't be able to live with myself knowing that i did nothing to help while a man stabbed another person to death.

Yes, Tribyen. I agree totally.
I believe that panic took hold of the group passengers, and once they ran, it's all over.
Needless to say that I wouldn't let that man do his act.

I often take the Greyhound bus and fall asleep on it while wearing my head phones. This really kind of freaks me out. Still, I'm going to take the bus home tomorrow but... man.
The absurdity of this crime has everyone talking and everyone shocked around my neck of the woods.
An update if anyone is interested... read this in one of the local papers.
The culprit hasn't said anything. Literally. When taken before the judge he didn't say a damn word. When the judge asked him if he was exercising his right not to speak he just shook his head.
That was all.
Edit: er, nodded his head.

One weird-ass story indeed. The guy belonged to a CHURCH?!
I agree with Tribyen as well, I just couldn't sit back and watch something like that happen so fast. I honestly don't know what the hell was the matter with those people, but the parents of that young kid are having a closed casket funeral for him, and all because of something so stupid like this. Society really needs to start respecting and looking after each other in a much better way.

I too thought people maybe should have helpped. The problem though that came to mind really is, a man stabbing someone for seemingly no reason in a robotic looking state isnt about to stop very easily and probably would have ended with more people getting injured or killed. Still though it is very sad to see this
I heard today that he was in court today and he only said one thing. "Please Kill Me".
Odd people out there.
death_rocker110- 08-06-2008
Suicidal or crazy I suppose.
Macshat- 08-06-2008
Now that is profoundly disturbing....
grasshopper- 08-06-2008
Grant him his wish.
Future Filmmaker- 08-07-2008
The apathy of society. It both creates killers, and it doesn't allow anyone to stop them.

Members of the controversial Westboro Baptist Church are threatening to picket the funeral of Tim McLean, the young man decapitated on a Greyhound bus last week.
The Kansas-based church - a small fundamentalist sect led by Fred Phelps - is reviled in the United States for pro-*test*-('")ing the funerals of hundreds of soldiers killed in the Iraq war. The sect gained notoriety in the 1990s by picketing the funeral of Matthew Shepard, a young gay man beaten to death in Wyoming.
Seven members of the church originally planned to picket theatre performances in Toronto and Red Deer, Alta., later this week. They recently added Mr. McLean's Manitoba funeral to their itinerary and plan to stand outside the service with signs reading "God hates you," "the wrath of God is revealed," and "God hates Canada." God is sending a message through Tim McLean's murder that He and the commandments must be obeyed, Ms. Phelps-Roper said.
"The reason we're going is it's dot-connecting time," Ms. Phelps-Roper said on Tuesday. "The Lord is coming, America is doomed, the wrath of God abides upon the children of disobedience. His wrath appears in the form of these God smacks that are going on all around us. They're only going to get worse, and they're only going to come faster."
Despite its threats, the group does not always show up at their publicized events. They also claim they will target two Alberta performances of The Laramie Project, a play about Matthew Shepard, and a Toronto play about the Westboro group titled The Pastor Phelps Project: a fundamentalist cabaret on opening night.
The Westboro Baptist Church is a tiny organization with only Mr. Phelps, his children, their spouses and perhaps one other family as members, according to Mark Potok, director of the intelligence project of the Southern Poverty Law Centre, a civil rights organization based in Montgomery, Ala.
"This is just about as despicable a bunch of people as you can find," he said. "They have picketed the funerals of little girls killed in bus crashes, of boy scouts killed in a tornado. These people actually celebrated the attacks of 9/11, saying this was God punishing America for its ‘fag-enabling ways.' ... It's interesting because Fred Phelps has managed to unite everyone in this country from the far-right to the far-left. He is despised by one and all."
Mr. Phelps himself is not expected to be among the group headed to Canada, Ms. Phelps-Roper said.

On an additional follow-up note to this, there was a group of these people stopped at the Canadian US border. Though later on there was an article in the local paper where one of these fundamentalists claimed a second group had snuck into the country while the border was distracted by the others. Apparently they did this by fed-exing their picket signs into Canada.
