My basement has flooded....again.
About 5 years ago or so during a large rain storm our sump pump in our basement decided to up and stop working which resulted in a bothersome flood, damaging and ruining many items we had down there (my dad keeps many valuable and sentimental items down there in his computer room/music room). It caused some problems to say the least but we worked it out Fast forward to today. Me and my mother sister and father where up at lovely sunny Sauble Beach enjoying our vacation when my brother called saying this same thing had happened again. Rain storm, sump pump (a new one I might add) failed, another flood. This time thigns are worse as many of my dads and brothers guitars where down there (though we seem to have saved them) along with many electronics, computer equpiment, speakers, etc. We haven't had time to really assess all th damage, we just went about gathering everything and bringing it upstairs to dry off and draining the water. We're lucky it only went up about 3 inches but still it may have ruined some irreplaceable video tapes from mine and my brothers early years, cassettes and art books from my dads days in high school, and various other items even insurance couldn't replace. Not to mention our fairly new carpeting and siding will have to come up. I could be up having a nice lovely campfire right now. Instead I'm surrounded by drying guitars and magazines. Just my luck :P

Ah, that sucks...big time. Probably would be a good idea to NOT store valuables in the basement now, eh? I'd be nervous every time I left the house.

Yeah, basements can be trouble when storing valuable stuff or having a room. I'd personally have the attic :)

http://www.limburger.nl/article/20080623/REGIONIEUWS01/66214247/1056 This link is of our newspaper. Heavy rains in Limburg as well. No damage in my house. But many people in other areas were not that lucky. I hope the damage isn't to big, Pieman. I suggest a backup-pump next time.
