Outpost 31 Site Route, June 2008
I was on vacation in Northern BC recently, and, decided to visit the Outpost 31 site. Unfortunately, I was foiled in my attempt. Firstly, the snow had made the upper portion of the old mining road impasible. Secondly, and more ominously, I am told that there was a rock-fall reinforcing the retreating snow. The word is that explosives will have to be deployed to remove the felled boulders and/or a new route carved out of the rock. I am unsure of the time-frame for completion. I got as far as the toe of the Salmon Glacier and the rest of the route was closed to traffic. The glacier itself, when compared with the 2003 photos posted on this site, looks much reduced in size (Todd concurs). Photos to be uploaded. Cheers! -Will McCready Red Deer, Alberta

Hi Will, Thanks for the e-mail, pics, and info from your trip. That is unfortunate you could not access the site. When Steve and I were reseraching the trip we took in 2003 we learned that June was much too soon to try and reach the site, and winter snow may still be blocking the Salmon Glacier Road. If you made it all the way to the toe of the glacier you were 3/4 of the way up to the site. Here is the photo you took of Salmon Glacier on June 7th, 2008, about 3 days ago. http://www.outpost31.com/todd/images/salmonglacierjune2008.jpg This photo can also be found the the 2009 Trip page here: http://www.outpost31.com/todd/stewart2009.html Indeed you are quite correct, the glacier is looking seriously depleted since we were there in 2003, and we were there late summer. Your photo is from early June. Not good. I would venture a guess just from our photos and observations here that something is definitely up in regards to global warming... Thanks again for the photo and update on your adventure north, T

No kidding. That really does look like it's shrunk from years ago. I was hoping to hike down to the glacier ice from the Outpost site when we arrive there next summer, but looks like I'll have to take some more steps to get there
