Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? Who watches the Watchmen? Bumping this thread on The Watchmen film! This film has been in DevHell for 20 years. Now Zach Snyder (of 300) fame is actually filming principal photography right. now. I actually trust this guy's vision given the flavor of some of the still shots. Anyone else excited to see it? http://watchmenmovie.warnerbros.com/

I'm interested in this project however The Watchmen is a graphic novel that I belive will be very hard to translate to film. 12 chapters with large writen articles full of exposition that are crucial to the deveolpment of the plot & characters. I'm hopeful they can pull it off but The Watchmen is a completely different animal as compared to 300 which was more of a visual spectacular.

Well I certainly take your point about the graphic novel and I used to be firmly entrenched in the "Watchmen is unfilmable" camp, but having seen some recent interviews with certain directors (particularly Ridley Scott with Bladerunner) I have renewed hope that there are filmmakers out there who have the artistry and the work ethic and the chutzpah to get a meaningful vision to the screen. I'm really hoping that Snyder is such a filmmaker. What really got me impressed was his recreation of the newsstand from the novel and Gunga Diner. And it is encouraging that Dave Gibbons (the original illustrator) is impressed with the sets. Those two facts I find very hopeful... I'm glad to know there are Watchmen fans on these boards... =D

I'm excited for this. Although, I heard Terry Gilliam really wanted to direct this movie and was turned down. That makes me oh so very sad... Mr Gilliam is just about my favourite director of all time. He would have truly made The Watchmen a twisted and sordid experience (I mean that in the best way possible). Suppose we'll all just have to wait and see how it turns out.

Hopefully the legal woes surrounding this project will be resolved quickly! From what I have gathered thus far, my confidence is high for this one.

I saw the trailer for this last night. I think some of the depictions of 80's New York are gonna be absolutely incredible. This film looks mind-blowing. I really hope this "unfilmable" story lives up to its expectations. Perhaps that may be impossible, but that trailer really bolstered my faith. And if Zach Snyder pulls it off, he'll be a movie-making juggernaut in the industry. He will join the ranks of your Peter Jacksons, Lucas's, Spielbergs... I'm envisioning a film that transcends genres, given there aren't any "marketable" superheroes like Spidey or Batman. It's all story here. And that could make all the difference....

I was more worried of how it would turn out before the trailer. After seeing the trailer I have fairly high hopes for this film. It looks brilliantly filmed, matching the graphic novel in at least a few scenes near perfectly. I realize how difficult a task it will be to truly capture the story and events correctly but as I said, I have high hopes for it, and will be seeing it for sure.
