SHARK ATTACKS! A thread to post the la-*test*-('") updates on all worldwide shark attacks!!http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/15993008/detail.html
SAN DIEGO -- A swimmer died Friday after being attacked by a shark in the water off Solana Beach, lifeguards reported.
The victim was Dr. Dave Martin, a 66-year-old retired veterinarian, according to family friend Rob Hill. Martin was a resident of Solana Beach since 1970, Hill said.
A group of nine swimmers entered the water near Fletcher Cove at about 7 a.m. for a morning ocean swim, according to Lt. Mike Clea of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. They swam northward, and while they were swimming, Martin was bitten on both thighs, Clea said.
Other swimmers looked back and saw Martin flailing before he was pulled under the water, Clea said. Witnesses said the victim was screaming when he resurfaced. Several other swimmers came to his aid and pulled the man to shore.
Lifeguards arrived and a helicopter ambulance was called, but Martin bled to death on the beach. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at 7:50 a.m., Clea said.
Helicopter video showed lifeguards, firefighters and police gathered at the main lifeguard station in Solana Beach. What appeared to be the victim's body covered by a yellow tarp was visible under a portable shade structure behind the headquarters.
Officials said Martin was a member of a local triathlete club called SD Tri Club.
Lifeguards did not know what kind of shark attacked the man, but they speculated that it was a great white. They closed the beaches around Solana Beach to swimmers for several hours. The water was reopened before noon, but officials are strongly recommending people to stay out of the water from Solana Beach north to Carlsbad, NBC 7/39 reported.

Richard Rosenblatt, a marine biologist, says his examination suggests Martin was almost certainly attacked by a great white shark between 12 and 17 feet long.
“It was typical great white shark behavior to attack from below, take a bite and then draw away,” he says.

It's being called Shark Attack Weekend.
A fatal GW attack in San Diego Friday morning. A bite on a surfer in New Smyrna Beach, FL Saturday morning on the foot, and another bite again in New Smyrna Sunday morning on the left calf of another surfer.

Is it just me, or are people much safer on unpopulated beaches? Where all the people are, eating all there food, the danger seems much higher.

Yep, for the third time in 3 days, someone has been bitten by a shark in New Smyrna Beach.
The most recent victim’s encounter was just before noon today. David Alger, 18, had just hopped off a wave when the shark took a chunk out of his left foot.
This makes 10 bites so far and all 10 bites have been in New Smyrna Beach.
Looks like it might be a record year for New Smyrna.

Looks like the sharks are biting back!

Umm... I have no idea where how populated the beaches are. According to the story, the guys were swimming with other swimmers. It's a similar pattern with many other other attacks.

Well, Volusia County, FL (Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach) has the busiest beaches in the world. More swimmers enter the ocean there than anywhere else in the world. So.......

But what about beaches that aren't populated as I stated earlier? Are beaches that have little to no people more safe than heavily populated ones? Because it seems that every shark attack is in a heavily populated beach.

Another fatal shark attack, 2nd fatal attack in 4 days... That's 5 consective days with attacks, 2 fatal.
TRIVIA: Interesting for movie fans that this attack at Troncones Baech took place very close to Zihuatanejo, the Mexican paradise where Andy and Red go in the end of THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION.
IXTAPA, Mexico (KGO) -- On Tuesday night, friends of a San Francisco man who took a surfing trip to Mexico, got the tragic news that he is the victim of a shark attack. Mexican authorities say it happened off the Southern Pacific Coast at Troncones Beach near the resort town of Ixtapa. The attack happened about 300 yards from shore.

Well, our record year was 2001 with 22 bites and last year we had 17. I have another interview with CNN later.
The media loves to blow this out of proportion. The fact is I see these sharks all the time. They're quite small and non-aggressive. You can touch them and they'll just swim away.
We've never had a fatality at NSB and no lost limbs. We lose more bathers to rip currents than anything.
The locals don't even bat an eyelash. But I get why tourists might be intrigued or frightened.

what a terrible way to die.
Yes, it is terrible, but is there any way that isn't? These days, there are even doubts about the humaneness of the lethal injection method. So is this the worst way? I'm not sure that it is. It might be better to be quickly eviscerated by a shark than to rot for months in a cancer ward.
One terrible, and long-standing fear that I have is of being in a situation where I am completely healthy but know that I am utterly doomed, for example:
1) Being buried alive.
2) Being on an aircraft where the cockpit has just been blown off/destroyed.
3) Falling from a great height in general.
Whenever I think about those poor people who actually jumped from the TT on 9/11, and try to imagine what they were going through, before and after they made that decision...what can I say? I regard myself as being a fairly clever guy but my intellect fails me entirely here. My emotions take over and I just end up in tears.
