Sombrero worn by Kurt Russell Looking for hat wore by Kurt Russell, who made it, and where to have one made.

You have no idea how bad I want one too. Well, maybe you do, if you look at my screen name.
It isn't the past tense of Mcshit! It's Mac's Hat! =D
ItAintFuchs- 12-28-2007
You'd be looking for a fur felt sombrero with a "Montana "peak" crown of at least 6" in height and a brim of about 7". It has a tolled leather hat band and a rawhide stampede string.
You would have to get one custom made and you're looking at several hundred dollars.
The Universal costume department just grabbed it off a rack at the wardrobe warehouse. There's no telling who made it. It was probably left over from an old 1940's or 1950's Western.
Best of luck.

It gets better brother, I found the guys who made his hat!!
I have a contact in Hollywood who put me in touch with an L.A. hat maker who's made hats for hundreds of films. Here's what they told me-
Dear Jared,
Yes, we do indeed make the hat, and in fact made some of the original for the Carpenter movie. To hand custom make the hat with the "Ranger" four crown, and the special four blocked curl-brim in 100% Western Weight Fur Felt would cost $598. If you wanted it in 200XX 100% Beaver it would be $898. There are two more element to the hat. If you wanted to rawhide "stampede strings" which wrap around the crown and center through the side of the crowns through eyelet's to lose ties on either side, it would be $75 extra. The hat would come with a matching rawhide headband at no extra cost. However if you wanted a similar multilayered rawhide and bow-tied hatband as in the movie it would be an extra $250.
Our custom hats come with a leather engraved sweatband, silk-stain lining, special lifetime guarantee and a certificate of authenticity.
Hope that helps. If you have any other questions, please write back and I'll be happy to help you.
Best,
Mark Mejia

Jarad,
Thanks for posting that interesting info. That's way more expensive than I thought for that sombrero. I'd only pay for the actual screen-used one - which would be worth a small fortune. I'd love to have his hat or jacket.
Cool stuff,
T

Yeah, hand made hats aren't cheap. You can find other hat makers who would do it for a couple hundred less but it wouldn't be nearly as accurate.

Wow. That is awesome. I gotta pull together a cool grand for that hat. Does anyone know where the original went? Does Kurt Russel have it? I doubt that, as he doesn't mention it in any commentary, even when the hat is discussed.
Seriously, thanks for posting this info ItAintFuchs!

No problem man, that's what I do in my free time. I've been working on my "Escape From New York" outfit for a couple years now along with a friend in L.A. Between the 2 of us we've tracked down the original boot maker, costume designer, production designer, photographer etc.
It's been a nightmare of epic proportions trying to replicate Snake Plissken's boots.
I've had to track down obsolete parts from the 70's, fabricate things from scratch, make my own rivets by hand, paint and create props from hard to find items that no longer exist. The camouflage for his pants took me over 100 hours to create and I still have to get it printed up and then made into pants!
Needless to say, I've gotten pretty good at knowing where to look for things.
Luckily "The Thing" had no costume designer so most of what the actors wore was "off the rack" clothing.

Hi Jared,
what's the name of this hat company? I'd love to have this made for myself. $900 isn't that bad considering it's made by the same folks who made the original.
I almost got Mac's sombrero made by a Mid-west hat maker 5 years ago but they were so rude because a woman wanted a man's style hat (actually Eastwood style hat from High Plains Drifter)...I never went ahead with it.
thanks
Kim

Hi Kim,
It's Mark Mejia at Baron Hats in Hollywood.
If you want Mac's jacket, look on Ebay for a vintage Schott bomber jacket and make sure it has the cream colored lining, NOT the zip out brown lining.
If you have any questions regarding wardrobe or props from the film, please don't hesitate to ask.
Take care,
Jared

Hi Jared, thank you so much.
Funny, I stumbled across Baron's Hats this weekend. Great to know they're the ones who made the hat. Your costume looks killer btw (avatar).
The hat is definitely on my to get done list, it's just so much fun and so O.T.T. western. First on my Mac-list: 2 custom MacReady figures (movie and novella versions) and my third Dan Brereton (Nocturnals) commission.
Expect a paypal payment for your cool patch shortly.
Take care,
Kim
