Team Mate Infections I've Seen my Guys Get Attacked By a Thing then Burst out,im asking how damage the solders can take before turning.

Most of the time it's scripted so it doesn't matter. It usually depends on a location you enter for a teammate to turn. For instance, it doesn't matter if Collins follows you into the hallway before he first boss. He'll change if you go there yourself. I had him wounded and dying upstairs, and because I went down their he transformed. The same thing goes with Carter #2. He won't change unless you go past the door he's standing behind. He'll follow you all over the first parts of the level, but one you cross that threshold he'll usually change (one time he didn't for me). That said, one time in the first level with Pace and Williams, several scuttlers jumped into Pace near the two flame grenades sitting on the barrels in such quick intervals that he didn't get a chance to shoot back. This resulted in him changing and it's one of the only times in the game where I've seen a non-scripted transformation. The other ones include Parnevik being blood -*test*-('")ed and before Boss #2, I attacked Dixon with a flamethrower after several separate loads and he transformed. It didn't work when I used a bullet firing weapon though.

To be of some help here :
- When it was designed, the Infection system was random, every NPC having a percentage of getting infected. It is still active in some parts of the game, for example in the first level where you meet Pace, he can get randomly infected. The same goes for Fisk who can always get randomly infected. That's the case for several NPCs in various parts of the game.
- In most parts though, the infection will be scripted. This means that when you go at a certain place or activate a button, the NPC will be instantly and automatically infected and bursts out. This is particularly obvious in the level with Collins or the one with Pace and Williams. The (very) bad thing about it is that you can -*test*-('") a NPC who is human and then have him getting a scripted infection one second later. That's really a huge problem in the game. I think the designers did it to ensure that NPCs won't go with the players as they did not want the players to be able to have more than 4 NPCs with him.
I think this limitation is mainly due to the PS2 version as on PC, I can have a lot of NPCs around without slowing down the game.
- Parnevik is a particular exception as he is a Thing from the beginning of the level and thus will burst out randomly. No scripted burst-out here.
- If you want, even on a PS2 or Xbox version, you can get Carter#2 for a longer time. Just make a NPC open the door for you to the room where Carter#2 is, and you will be able to get him for the rest of the level as the script triggering his infection and burst-out is activated if you open the door by yourself. Of course, you won't have him in the following level though.
- I have created a buggy version of the game with a hexadecimal editor with no scripted burst-outs and all of the NPCs to be randomly infected. I'm also working right now on another version of this mod to have a FPS view, no scripted burst-outs and NPCs coming with you from one level to another. I've also modified parts of the AI so that the Things are more dangerous, the trust and courage systems are not broken like in the final game and so on...

How can you get an NPC to open the Carter #2 door if you have to use the action button to open it?
Gary- 04-05-2008
Go into the room with the save point and the cctv cameras. Use the CCTV Cameras to zoom on the doors of the cells. Next, ask a NPC to go and open one of the cells. He will open the door to Carter#2 in the process.

He's not in a cell. He's behind the transparent door at the beginning of the level.

Yes, I know... That's why I said "He will open the door to Carter#2 in the process"...
That's Last Digit of Pi who found this on console, so here is his original post, maybe it will be clearer this way :

Another weird thing: On level 10 (the level where you get Falchek, Dixon, and Fisk on your team), I managed to get Carter to not burst out! o_O Normally, when I start out on this level, I fix the Medibay Power, open the "front door", so to speak, lure the giant Thing into the Medibay, go around the operating table, out of the room, and close the door to trap the Thing in there for the time being. I give the ammo to Falchek, get him to clear the North Area and Sleeping Quarters of scuttlers, get the items, and leave him there, then open the Medibay door, lure the Thing into the Sterilization area, run out, and trap him in there. I go get Falchek, get Dixon, have him fix the Security power box, get the weapons, then go back to the North Area, open the door to the room where Carter is, wait for him to start bursting out, shoot him, torch him, kill him. Then I get Falchek to go to Cell 6 to get Fisk. But this time, I had Falchek go to Cell 6 before I opened the door with Carter (I issued the order from the Sleeping Quarters, so that I would be far enough away from Carter(Yeah, it was a little experiment to see if Carter would go thing near Falchek and try to kill him; if he did, I would have rushed in there, shot Carter-Thing up and torched him, of course. I can't afford to lose Falchek!)) Falchek opened the door and ran past Carter without him bursting out. I got just close enough to get Carter on my NPC screen, then gave him a weapon, and he trusted me. I then went up to him, Falchek came back with Fisk, the cutscene occurred where Fisk told me the switch sequence, and Carter still didn't burst out! And he was with me for the rest of the level! Unfortunately, he mysteriously disappeared after the level; he wasn't with me in the elevator at the start of the next level. Now, if I can find a way to get Stanmore to not burst out.. "

Ive Been Doing Some -*test*-('")s on the game where i let a team mate get attacked by different forms till he gets infected these are my results:
Scuttlers-4 or 5 times biting till turning
walker-still running -*test*-('")
team mate thing-5 or 6 claw attack
Biped creatures-3 or 4 chest arm attack
Bull Dog thing-still running -*test*-('")s

That's not the way it works, Michael31. The NPCs who can be randomly infected have a percentage of chance of being infected, no matter what Thing is attacking them. So, sometimes, one hit will be enough to infect a NPC and other times, he can be hit ten times and still not be infected.
michael31- 04-05-2008
Well it happened Plenty of times while I played, but i think you are right because the number of times it takes to hit them and turn into the thing changes.
Weldon- 04-05-2008
Ok my bad, I missed that. There's a cut-scene with Fisk!? Weird. Yeah, Carter not transforming into a thing usually results in me running out of guns though. :P
