The Secret to Burning Fat: Swimming with Sharks OK, OK, I don't know how much of a "secret" it is, but I do have a formula that works for burning the maximum amount of fat in the shor-*test*-('") period of time.
You aren't going to like it, but it works.
First you must hit cardio for about an hour BEFORE breakfast. At this time, your blood is in the fasting state and your glycine levels are very low. This means that after a few minutes of increased respiration due to exertion, your body will be forced into a state of lipolysis. That is, it will turn to fat for stored energy.
Bare in mind that when you are doing your hour or so of pre-breakfast cardio, you are not going balls to the wall. You should not be panting. But you should be sweating and your heart rate MUST be elevated.
You should give yourself no more than two days off between pre-breakfast cardio days.
But wait! That's not all!
Your body will reach a state of equilibrium very quickly if the above routine was all you did. Your fat burn would still occur, but at a significantly reduced rate.
Therefore you MUST incorporate High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)into your routine.
HIIT means that for 20 minutes, every day, I exert myself by running (or stationary bike or swimming or whatever) at 90% of my maximum (at the very least) for 1 minute, take the exertion down to very moderate for 30-40 seconds. Repeat until 20 minutes has passed.
It is fucking brutal. By the end I am pouring sweat out of every pore in my body. If I'm swimming that means that even though I am in the water, I CANNOT GET COOL! Sweating in cool water is something everyne should experience to truly be able to appreciate psychosis.
It is absolutely devastating.
But once I get in the resting state I feel like The Terminator!
HIIT is not performed before breakfast. It should be performed later in the day when your glycine is higher. I do it in the evening, but you decide when for yourself.

Yes, yes, and yes.
You are indeed sweating when you are swimming hard you just don't see it. For the most part the water temp keeps you cooler though. The two pools I train in are different temps; one is between 81-82F and the other is around 87-88F. I do not mind the warmer water (actually prefer it, especially this time of year) and when pushing extra hard in it I am hot and definately sweating.
I am incredibly envious of your training location Dave. If I were you I'd be doing an ocean swim session probably twice a week. When I was in Boynton Beach for 4 months I was in the ocean almost every day. Check out the awesome swimming speed suits/wet suits here: http://www.blueseventy.com/ I am planning to do my first open water swim here this summer, before moving onto ocean swim races. I think open water is my niche in Masters Swimming.

Great post indeed and top advice.
I've been doing my workout before breakfast and am really noticing the fat burn. I haven't been doing the HIIT training but I'm going to give it a go now.

I do swim in the open water. I just haven't recently. But I intend to start up again.
We do have a bit of a shark problem here in NSB though. It makes for some anxiety...
And thanks Talwyn! Let me know how that HIIT training goes...

You're in New Smyrna Beach? I swam at Cocoa Beach in October. No fear. Swim fast.

We have more shark bites here than anywhere else in the world -- combined.
But there has never been a fatality, or anything even near. Most of the sharks here are juvenile Spinners--three or four feet long or so. They won't do much damage and they aren't aggressive. They just bite anything that moves and if you aren't a fish they let you go. You might need some stitches.
However, we have seen a bull or two over the years.

From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Smyrna_Beach,_FloridaNEW SMYRNA BEACH
Shark Attacks
New Smyrna Beach is considered the shark attack capital of the world. Despite being once known as "The World's Safest Bathing Beach", New Smyrna Beach has more shark attacks per square mile than any beach on Earth according to the Discovery Channel. Blacktip, Spinner and Bull sharks are commonly found just south of Ponce Inlet. Despite the number of shark attacks, Volusia county officials have not closed these beaches to swimmers. Bull sharks can be particularly dangerous as they are aggressive and will feed in relatively shallow water where swimmers are. However, shark attacks are rarely fatal.
All I can say is awesome. Call me sick, call me twisted, I would love to live (and swim) there........... (If I had the extreme luxury of choice, my fave area of FL is Gulf Coast, Sarasota; Longboat Key, Siesta Key.) When I am next in the area we gotta get in some ocean/beach time Dave. I believe Universal is again planning to run THE THING - Assimilation at Halloween Horror Nights this year, I would like to come down again for that.

SPINNER SHARKCarcharhinus brevipinna is a requiem shark of the family Carcharhinidae, found in the western Atlantic Ocean. Its length is up to about 3 m.
The spinner shark is a slender shark with a long, narrow, pointed snout, long gill slits and small, narrow-cusped teeth. The first dorsal fin is small, there is no interdorsal ridge, and the labial furrows are longer than in any other grey shark.
It is found on the continental and insular shelves from close inshore to offshore. It is capable of vertical spinning leaps out of the water as a feeding technique in which the sharks spins through a school of small fish with an open mouth and then breaks the surface. It feeds mainly on pelagic bony fishes, also small sharks, cuttlefish, squids, and octopuses.
It forms schools, and is highly migratory off Florida and Louisiana and in the Gulf of Mexico.

We draw in a lot of juveniles. Rarely see sharks longer than a meter.
Still, those fins are completely destructive to your rhythm!

Teen gets stitches after shark bite
Associated Press - March 21, 2008 8:54 PM ET
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A teenager is recovering from injuries after he was bitten by a shark in New Smyrna Beach.
Authorities say the 13-year-old boy was wading in thigh-deep water today when he felt something grab his leg. The shark bit his ankle, then fled.
The boy suffered gashes on his ankle and was taken to the hospital for stitches.
It was unclear what kind of shark it was.

Yup. I'm PR Director here, so I get called by CNN for interviews everytime this happens.
These Spinners are tiny. Once in a GREAT while we'll get a bull. One guy was diving headlong into waves and smashed his face into a 6 foot bull shark. The shark took off like a shot.
Talwyn- 03-30-2008
Head first into a bull shark? Christ!?!
No wonder the shark took off but that would have been a brown trousers moment for the fella that head butted the shark I'm sure!
Todd- 04-23-2008
Then you probably heard about this one too, a 14 year-old girl got bitten on the lower leg this past Sunday. The 7th shark attack this year for New Smyrna Beach.

Yep. The magic number seems to be eight. Once we get 8 bites in a season the media goes crazy around here. I can hardly wait.
These sharks are not big at all. They're barely sharks. They're guppies with attitude.
