THE THING big screen in Hyder!!!!!!! This is wild....
I just got an e-mail into the site from a guy who in 2005 opened a theatre in Hyder, the Bearden Theatre. It is open summers and caters to the locals and tourists. He has said if we are interested he can screen THE THING for us when we are up there for our next trip.
Now this is too cool. Imagine seeing the film 35mm just 45 min. from where it was filmed. Wow. He has left his phone number and I'm gonna give him a call and get more info.
More soon,

Holy Freaking JESUS! I'M SO GOING THERE! I'll try talking about that trip with my parents. I'm really wondering about their reaction... *big grin*

That would be the best!!! I hope we can do that!!!!

I have to admit, that would be perfect.

I played phone tag the past 5 days with James Russell, the fellow who owns and runs this theater in Hyder, but we finally caught each other tonight. James has run the Bearden Theater the past 2 summers in Hyder, catering to locals and tourists.
He has said he can definitely screen THE THING for us in 2009 when we are up there!
He screens the Bears IMAX film, and plans to start screening all films shot locally, like THE THING, INSOMNIA, BEAR ISLAND, EIGHT BELOW, and ICEMAN. His theater is not massive or state-of-the-art but seats 35+ and has a digital projector on a wall-sized screen. Considering the remote location, this is not bad at all. More than we could ask for, and to think, we'll be watching THE THING a hop, skip, and a jump from where it was filmed! The Outpost #31 site lies just literally a short drive up the road.
James is sending me some pics and a video via snail mail so I'll have more info on the theater and pics for the site soon.

Man, that would be cool!!!

Talking more with James Russell, known the "Movie Man" to the residents of Stewart/Hyder got some more news. He is getting very positive vibes and feedback from his connections on this and plans to set up his 2009 summer season with a THE THING theme; multiple screenings, mock props/sets to decorate the theater and suggests we do a group trip up to the site one night for a bonfire.
He also said if we do this right that The Tonight Show might be interested.....

I had forgotten about you and Moon on Leno! That's pretty cool!

True to his word James sent me a DVD with footage of his drive up Salmon Glacier Road to the site and all the way to the Granduc Mine as well as footage of his initial theater set-up, a huge canvas tent with is projector and screen set up inside. (He had THE THING playing!) Too cool. He now runs the Bearden Theater in Hyder and as you know is gonna screen the film for us up there in 2009.
I did see he filmed TONS of bears on his drive up Salmon Glacier Road as well as some footage at Fish Creek.
I wil get screencaps up, but I am not sure how to get pics from a DVD on my PC. Any suggestions??

You might try looking for some free DVD screen capture software. The page at
http://shareme.com/showtop/freeware/dvd-video-capture-software.html
advertises some downloads, but I've never used them and don't know how safe they are (spyware, malware, etc.).
That's interesting to hear about the bears. I don't remember seeing a single bear on the drive up. Just the ones down at the salmon viewing area. Camping overnight at the site is sounding more and more unlikely, especially with seeing the film at a local theater instead.
I didn't want to buy 10 gallons of bug spray anyway. :)

Just rub tea leaf all over your skin. Now that actually works. Bugs just don't like it and it doesn't smell like poison. It's actually edible as well.

Yeah, I have a suggestion... Send me the DVD, and I'll do it, then return it. Just a suggestion... It does sound damn cool!

When you play a DVD on your computer, what program comes up to run it Todd? From my experience, they all seem to offer a screen capture option. Let me know... Give me a call if needed.
