THING SEQUEL - YOUR THOUGHTS! I've been visiting this site for many years but have only just signed up for these boards....
I have been, in my spare time, writing a screenplay for a THING sequel and I just wanted to get some feedback from people what kind of movie it should be. I've almost completed the first draft but I'd just like to get an angle on what the real fans feel it should be!
To give you an idea of where my script is heading...I really didn't like the ideas in the Dark Horse Comics and I hated the video game. From reading the forum I know lots of you enjoyed the game but for me it just wasn't THE THING! I didn't want to create a carbon copy of Carpenter's movie but I've gone for a more real feel. I asked myself alot of what if questions to get, what I think, is a decent and real story. I've gone for a mix of the Paranoia of who might be THE THING again and the world wide Paranoia of government cover-ups.
I was horrified, in a bad way, at the sight of hordes of Spider-Heads and other monsters in the game as this was totally out of character to the creature in the movie. The whole gung-ho macho grunt army thing didn't work for me either and that you would just blast anything that moved, spraying the other grunts with THING blood and guts????
Anyhow...give me a few more months to get a second draft sorted and I'll post. Then you can give me your opinions! Don't worry i can take criticism.
Cheers

Personally i would like to see a story that picks up around the same time the game did, but instead of all the action taking place at outpost 31 again maybe do a "Prisoner of Ice" type of setting where the Thing is discovered but no one knows what it is so they take the frozen carcass back for "study" and it thaws out on the ship/submarine/747 whatever and it has to be stopped yet again.
The reason i say the story should take place on board a craft of some type is that its hard to create a sense of isolation and paranoia in any other setting, at least in our modern world.
I gotta be honest and say that i think that the goverment cover up angle is gonna be hard to work, due to the simple fact that if any goverment entity or scientific organization ever managed to bring the thing back to anyplace with any decent sized amount of people, e.g.: military base, science lab etc. it would assimilate so fast that no one would have a chance. Think about it, theres so many people in those types of installations, that the thing wouldn't even have to be a perfect imitation due to the fact that it would be impossible for anyone to know EVERYONE.
The only reason the guys at outpost 31 had a snowballs odds in hell of beating the thing was the fact there were so few of them they knew each other VERY well, and living in such cramped quaters it would be hard for the thing to assimilate without being caught in the act.

Please post in the SEQUEL/PREQUEL/REMAKE thread.

New thoughts, new topic, that other topic is dead :P I prefer a new discussion, new thoughts, new posts...
I hope it will go back to the 80's, maybe 90's. I hate those modern horrors with all kind of modern technologies etc. I hope the storyline has just as much questions as The Thing has, such as the Blair thing (when infected?), what happened to Nauls?, what happened to..., whose schadow... etc. etc. I think that made The Thing big as it is now. Also I hope the environment will be very snowy again with the claustrofobic ambiance and the Norwegian camp. Most important of the sequel/remake will be the storyline, the characters and the ambiance. If they blow one of those aspects the movie will suck.

Although I'm working on a Thing video game mod, I agree with you that a Thing sequel should be much more close to the original story in terms of paranoia (something which is kind of missing from the game and the comics). So I would be curious to read your script, although there will probably be things I will disagree on, notably if you go on the way "people do not know they are Things" and so on (but this is one of the many issues on which the Thing-fans are divided, so I doubt you can come up with a story which will satisfy us all :P ).

I second FF. All discussion of prequels/sequels/remakes/companion movies etc. should go in the appropriate thread. That's what it's there for.

I'm sorry Z@3 Redrum, but the other topic is not dead, because it is the same exact topic you're discussing now. There's a reason we've stickied those FAQs.
