WINTER TRIP - feedback from Murray @ ExploreNorth
In the past some of us had discussed the idea of a winter trip up to the site, would this even be a possibility with Salmon Glacier Road no longer being plowed daily through the winter months? I finally got in touch again with Murray Lundberg of ExploreNorth who is an expert on the are and was the one who gave SPC and I bang on directions to the site which we found in August 2003. It seems the possibility of a winter trip is out of reach and impractical: Hi Murray, I have a few questions about Stewart, B.C. I'd like to ask you... As you know we are planning a return trip for the summer of 2009 to visit the filming location of the film. (Our Aug. 2003 trip was a huge success and I fell in love with the area, I know I will be back more than once...!) -Do you know, or know where I can find what elevation the site is at? -Do you know where I can find online weather/climate data for the site, which as you know is just past the Salmon Glacier lookout on the old Ganduc mine road? I can access Stewart and Hyder weather, but I am guessing the site's weather is a lot different, much colder. I've been seeing Stewart has a relatively mild winter, much warmer than where I am! -This may be more geared towards Stewart locals, but, do you think a winter trip to the site is a possibility? I have heard that mining road is not maintained through winter and can sometimes be unpassable from the heavy winter snowfall until June... Can the site be accessed in winter by any means? Snowmobile, etc.? Thanks Murray, hope to hear back from you and stay in touch! Todd Hi Todd, It's great to hear from you again - and I'm pleased to hear that you're going back for another look. I'll do some digging for the exact elevation and climate data - I may have it in some old mining reports. You're right, though - it is a far different world than Stewart/Hyder. As a former Stewart local with a backcountry passion, I can tell you that the film site is accessible in the winter in theory, but it's a difficult multi-day snowmobile trip requiring a very experienced guide (which I don't think is available anymore). Due to the extremely steep terrain and deep snow (ca. 50 feet at the film site if I remember correctly), you can't come up the road (or even from that direction) - you approach from the north, from Tide Lake. I'll get back to you early next week, as I'm buried in a time-critical project at the moment. Murray

We have a pretty brutal winter here in Canada...but not as harsh as anywhere in Scandinavia. This will be my first full winter this far north, and if anyone can believe this, I may be moving further north............ I think you gotta learn to love it. :? T

Hi Todd, Accidently stumbled on your site and found it interesting. I lived in Stewart in 1996 and explored the site of Outpost #31. I had heard it was filmed around the grand duc site. I love old mining sites as much as you guys love the Thing.... ok probably not as much as you guys...humour Anyway, totally new to this site but like it. PS. I reside in Smithers, BC which is 3.5 hours away from Stewart. You should check out the services in Smithers when you arrange your trip in 2009. It has lots to offer and is same distance as Terrace Stewart. Just to suggest a second option for you. You are welcome to contact me in the future for contacts or references in the area Ron

Hi Ron, Thanks for stopping by our board to post. You actually found the Outpost site back in '96? Very cool..did you find/see the chopper wreckage and remains of the camp? Hope to maybe have you join us in 2009 when we go back. Steve and I have talked of going up to the Granduc Mine on the next trip up...I can also add you to the Stewart 2009 page if you wish. I am familiar with Smithers. You probably already are aware of this but they filmed some of recent film Eight Below, yet another spot in B.C. standing in very well for Antarctica. Please do stay in touch, Todd RETURN TO STEWART: http://www.outpost31.com/todd/stewart2009.html
