I remember posting at an Outpost 31 forum a long time ago, not sure if it was this one.. I always use the same username..
Anyway I am making a sequel to the Thing and wanted to share one of the props for the movie. We are hoping to have it done in the next month. Should be fun and have a lot of cues from the real movie.
a few pics of one of the props, this is a stop motion animation puppet. We hope to have 3 or 4 creature effects in the movie.
This is our Teaser Trailer. Very simplistic. Just to get us in the mood.

Hope everything works out... |

determined to get you guys excited about this so I will post another prop from the movie. This one will be built to the same detail as the crawling head puppet.

Thanks Khazar. I've been waiting for a sequel since 1982 and nothing so I decided enough is enough..
Small cast, simple story, but I hope to have very developed Thing creatures. I hope that would at least give all us Thing fans a little taste of a real sequel..
I don't know about you guys but if one of you had made a Thing Fan film.. I would be dying to see it.. Actually on dailymotion they have a fan made Thing remake.. it was pretty damn good.

These are really good.
Honestly, though, you shuld be posting this shit in the Main Forum (All Other Things) or in the Movie Forum. If only so that they'll get more traffic/exposure. They are really good and they really should be seen by the people on the website.
Todd, FF? You guys seeing this? |

How exactily are you going to mix live action people with stop motion puppets, do you use Green screen. :? |

That's the plan. Live action filmed without the creature, including some interactive stuff like strings to knock over foreground elements. Then film the creature greenscreen and mix it together. I have no idea how well it will work. |

Well thier are some ways to make it work but the biggest problem with that is the halo effect given off by the object in front of the screen.
If you ask me I'd stick to puppets and costumes, because if your doing something on that scale is vary dificult to make the shot flow correctly.
I've tested what your talking about on scale modles before. |

Yea but I plan to have the head be very active. Running and jumping knocking things over. It's just a fan film, if you see a slight halo it won't matter..
Besides I can't wait to see if I can do it.. half the fun is making it work. |

I have made a stuffed soldier that would be used for the blood test scene in my movie. The Palmer mask is used for it. Later the puppet will be swaped with an actor. |

Just figured out a great way to get a really bloody looking thing without pouring lots of fake blood on the prop. I mixed Red food coloring with latex that drys clear. You paint the prop with this stuff (looks like strawberry milk when it's wet) but after it drys it looks just like you dumped a whole bottle of fake blood on your thing mask except its dry and won't rub off or drip.
Not going to post pics until after the movie since I have spoiled it enough. |

I know what that is! It's gonna be an alien structure for the puppets! 8) |

and now I can't sleep. I shake my fist in the general direction of both Mount Charleston and your garage of evil yet completely awesome puppetry. What are the chances of there being a magic download somewhere that I can watch the whole thing at once? Seems it might be more rocktacular that way. Or perhaps we can negotiate a dead drop, where I will leave delicious cookies and return days later to find a copy burned on dvd?
I quite enjoyed it and I can't wait to see these other fan films that are coming out. I see I've got plenty to look forward to until this supposed H'wood prequel. |

hey thanks for watching. Actually if you look at the bottom of the page of each video there is a link where you can download it. That is one of the nice things about Vimeo... as for a DVD.. maybe later.
Speaking of my garage I made a making of special too... this one is on youtube though....

Not based on the thing, no this one is going to be MUCH harder... don't expect it any time soon though, it will take me forever to build the props for this one... |

Terminators Vs Aliens. Notice both of those are plural. No CGI, all props. no skin job Terminators BTW, all endo skeletons. (well maybe one skin job). And secret guest stars.
All fullsize, almost no miniatures. |
